Paul perhaps might be one of the best character studies that one can do from Scripture. He was a murderer, persecutor, and an overall disobedient man in the eyes of God. One of the first accounts we read about Paul is when he is consenting to Stephen’s death. Acts 8:1, “Now Saul was consenting to his death,…” This word ‘consenting’ according to Strong’s #G4909, means to be pleased together, to agree with together, to applaud, and to consent. Persecution of the church was rampant– Paul was a ring leader in this circus.
Shortly after Stephen’s death, Paul was on his way to Damascus. By the way, he was on his way to get letters authorizing him to imprison New Testament Christians. We all know the story. Christ – in a way that is almost incomprehensible to a mortal mind – appears to Saul. He is a bright, speaking light that only Saul could see and understand. The men who were with him saw the light, but they could not hear nor understand what was happening (Acts 22:9, 9:7). We can then go back to Acts 9 and 22 to observe the rest of the conversion. However, my focus is this: there are people in our lives today that are similar to Paul.
Paul was in good conscious and zealous, just like some of the world today. In Philippians 3:6, Paul says “concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is counted in the law, blameless.” Furthermore, in Galatians 1:13 and Acts 22:3, Paul explains his zeal behind his action.
We have people around us today of this same nature. Not obedient to God and His word, but zealous in some way towards the idea of serving Him. If they are in error, as was Paul, what can we do for them that is similar to the people in Paul’s life?
- Fulfill the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16)
Ananias was told in a vision to go find Paul, and he did. You and I have the same obligation today, not through visions or dreams, but through the Word.
- Live in a way that reflects the gospel call (Ephesians 4:1)
Ananias had a good reputation (Acts 22:12), which likely persuaded Paul more.
- Share the message of the gospel (back to Matthew 28–teach, baptize, teach)
Ananias told Paul exactly what he needed to do (Acts 22:16).
Paul was faithful (in good conscience) to God even as a non-Christian. There are others around us that are like that today. How did God use others to get to Paul, and how can he use you?

Welcome! We are so glad you stopped by. Come Fill Your Cup is a group of Christian ladies dedicated to equipping women for study and service. We know you are busy and that life’s hectic pace pulls you in so many directions, but you can’t truly be the woman God desires unless you take time to fill your own cup…not with spa days (though we love a good spa!) or the latest novel…but with God’s Holy Word. We want to help you with that! Our goal is to reach you in the midst of your busy day and give you encouragement, education, and fellowship as you strive to live the life God has laid before you. Our prayer is that we can help fill your cup so that you, in turn, can overflow to all those around you. So, as we like to say…come fill your cup, and let it overflow!
