More Than Appearance: The Condition of the Heart

April 22, 2026 by Savannah Slater Leave a Comment

The condition of our hearts matters more than anything we display on the outside. While others may only be able to see our actions, God sees deeper; our thoughts, motives, and desires. As Christian women, learning to guard our hearts is not about being perfect, but being perfect in Christ and allowing Him to shape and mold our lives to the Scriptures. So how can we guard our hearts from worldliness today?

In 2 Timothy 3:1-7, Paul is warning Timothy about these people’s sins and lusts that have drawn them away from God. When looking at these Scriptures a couple things stick out to me. First he writes a list of various sins not only outward actions but also a heart issue: pride, selfishness, lack of love, and a disregard for the truth. Then he states “having the form of godliness but denying its power” in verse five. We can have this outward appearance of a faithful Christian while being far from God on the inside.

We may say the right things, attend church regularly, and appear put together, yet still struggle with hidden sins like bitterness, slander, gossip, or jealousy. This is why we have warning to guard our hearts because in Proverbs 4:23 it says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” God is aware that Satan will use any opportunity to further isolate you from Christ. He cautions us to protect our hearts because he is aware that these times will come. We will all be tempted. We are not tempted by God but by our own desires (James 1:13-14). We all have different struggles we go through and that’s why as Christians we are to lean on each other in these moments. Encouraging one another and lifting each other up in prayer can be impactful when going through these tough situations.

We need to be ready. Satan is always ready to attack. 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.“ He warns us that Satan is ready to take any chance he gets to draw you further away from Christ. Also 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “Scripture is given by inspiration of God for reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness, so that we may be fully equipped for every good work.” We have the instructions we need to be rooted in Christ and to guard our hearts from sin. We have to be consistently striving to glorify God daily.

Guarding our hearts as Christians is necessary because everything flows from it. The condition of our hearts will ultimately shape our thoughts, actions, and our relationships with God. If we aren’t careful it’s easy to slowly become influenced by the world without even realizing it. This requires more than just knowledge of the Scriptures but it also requires action. As Christians we are called to be different, set apart, and not blend in with the patterns of the world but stand firm in the truth. So let us be diligent in protecting our hearts knowing that a heart aligned with Christ will lead to a life that glorifies Him.

CFYC About Image Welcome! We are so glad you stopped by. Come Fill Your Cup is a group of Christian ladies dedicated to equipping women for study and service. We know you are busy and that life’s hectic pace pulls you in so many directions, but you can’t truly be the woman God desires unless you take time to fill your own cup…not with spa days (though we love a good spa!) or the latest novel…but with God’s Holy Word. We want to help you with that! Our goal is to reach you in the midst of your busy day and give you encouragement, education, and fellowship as you strive to live the life God has laid before you. Our prayer is that we can help fill your cup so that you, in turn, can overflow to all those around you. So, as we like to say…come fill your cup, and let it overflow!
