Ah, candy! I don’t think I’ve ever met a candy I didn’t like! But have you ever thought about candy in conjunction with scripture? Many years ago a friend inspired me with a baggie full of assorted candies along with Bible verses of encouragement and admonition…what a wonderful idea! The following is a list that includes some of those original candies I received and others I’ve since added. I hope these will inspire you to heed the words of the Psalmist:
“O taste and see that the LORD is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” Psalm 34:8 NAS
*Atomic Fireball – Be careful with your words! “So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!” James 3:5 NAS
*Bit O’Honey – You can accomplish much with pleasant words and a smile. “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24 NAS
*Bubble Gum – Remember the importance of humility; don’t blow up your own ego at the expense of others. “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” James 4:10 NAS
*Hershey’s Kiss – Remember that anyone can put a glistening silver cover on the outside, but it’s what’s on the inside that counts! “…for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7b NAS
*Jawbreaker – Remember that listening is more important than talking. “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” James 1:19 NIV
*Jolly Rancher – Don’t forget to laugh and to have some fun! “A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22 NAS
*LifeSavers – With God, help is always close at hand and you are never alone! “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble…for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 NAS
*Saltwater Taffy – Even when you’re feeling stretched thin, remember that your life is an example to others. “You are the salt of the earth…Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:13a,16 NAS
And I’ll close with my personal favorite:
*Starburst – Nothing makes me burst with happiness more than knowing that Jesus is the bright morning star (Revelation 22:16) and that all those who follow Him (Romans 6:3-8) will someday hear the sweetest words of all: “Well done, good and faithful servant….enter into the joy of your master.” Matthew 25:21 ESV
How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103 NAS
