1 John 5:20a
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
Greetings! To my sister Bible class teachers,
Have you ever wanted to get to know someone better?
How do we do that?
First, we set out in search of where we might have an encounter with them. A neighborhood gathering, football game, church building foyer, the sidewalk, yard, park, porch, etc.
Then there are questions to ask! Are you new in town? Where are you from? Would you like to get together for tea or coffee? What are your interests? Can you stay for the potluck today? Is there anything I can help you with today? Would you like to look over some Bible passages together? Etc.
Well, there is one person we should all want to get to know better and that is Jesus!
One year when I was teaching Sunday morning Bible class, grades 3-5, I thought we needed to do just that. Get to know Jesus better! But how? Our studies were already helping us know about the miracles He performed. But I thought they needed to get to know Jesus more on their level. Answer some questions we might ask someone today to get to know them better.
Since we don’t know what Jesus looked like I chose to use a silhouette with arms outstretched, as if Jesus were welcoming them to come and get to know Him better.
I enlarged the shape to life-size drawn onto black bulletin board paper by using our opaque projector and mounted this silhouette onto a large stand-up piece of cardboard covered with blue bulletin board paper.
Added the typed and printed title. “Jesus…Getting to Know Him Better.”
The questions about Jesus that I thought might perk my student’s interest were also typed and printed which made them easier to read.
Each week we began class by answering one of the questions, looking up the answer in the Bible.
I ended up adding the Bible verses to each question that we answered so it would be easy to go back over the questions and have ready answers.
These 3rd-5th graders absolutely loved getting to know Jesus better during our 13 weeks together!
Another great way to use a silhouette such as this is to make it poster board size!
It would be much easier to laminate and store.
Instead of covering a board with paper, you could choose the color of poster board you wanted the black silhouette and title to be glued upon. (I would still enlarge the shape of the person onto black paper and glue the silhouette and title onto the poster board and then laminate.)
Cut and laminate the questions and Bible verse answers separately before adding them to your silhouette poster.
Once your questions and Bible verse answers are laminated separately, use Velcro to attach each question and scripture to find the answer, to your laminated poster.
You could also laminate stars to add to the questions after answering them.
Use this idea over and over again!
I also had a poster displayed in the room about Jesus and the age He was when certain things took place in His life.
John 21:25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
John 20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
(Along with the posters about Jesus, this wall features our memory verses. I printed them in a couple different versions, one was easier to understand but did not change the meaning of the verse. Each verse was covered with black construction paper and had a star with the number of the lesson, so each week we reviled our memory verse. I left the star with the number, so we knew which week the verse was from. The student’s names were also displayed among the memory verses.)
(On this wall, along with our timeline, I displayed the theme of our Bible lessons and had a list of each lesson title on the red poster plus a list of all the miracles of Jesus. Also displayed is a poster defining the word miracle, and a picture of Jerusalem today looking at it from the Mt. of Olives.)

Looking for the good,
