Did you realize that 75%-90% of teens walk away from their faith background when they graduate high school? This should be a very sobering statistic! Think about this in terms of the youth group at your local congregation; 8 out of 10 of them will leave the Church. In Game Plan, Joe Wells deals with this issue head on. He examines the different tactics that Satan is using to attack our youth and what we can do to stop it.
In one of the first chapters Joe interviews a young man who was a “youth group all-star” and now defines himself as an “atheist agnostic humanist.” He reveals what he now believes and how he lost his faith. One of the major catalysts to his transformation was his college Old Testament class. Joe does a great job of examining where the threat to our children is coming from and sometimes, as in the case of this young man, it is where we would least expect it.
The book continues outlining agendas that are actively being pushed on our children from every direction and giving us Biblical refutations and solutions for them. These include humanism, homosexuality, abortion and the sexualization of America. An interview of Abby Johnson is included. She was a worker at Planned Parenthood and is now an advocate for the pro-life movement. Joe discusses the facts and ideas we must get back to so that we can save the souls of our younger generation. He gives very practical solutions and options for parents and mentors. The book closes by giving some “Practice Drills” that set forth hypothetical situations and allows the reader to see several options and their consequences. Included in each drill are several scriptures that speak to the various circumstances.
As a parent and a youth worker’s wife, this is one of my favorite books. I recommend it to anyone who has children, is thinking about having children or works with children. Joe Wells does an excellent job of presenting the issues facing our kids and giving practical and Biblical solutions.
