“Someone”
Sixty-six books written by 40 different people over a span of roughly 1500 years... that’s what you’ll find in the pages of the Bible. And as anyone who has read it cover to cover knows, it can be a bit overwhelming! But did you know that the theme of these 31,000+ verses can be summed up in one simple word? Here’s how…
As you read through the Old Testament books from Genesis to Malachi, a theme becomes apparent: “Someone” is coming.
Old Testament prophecies, numbering in the hundreds, speak of this “someone” who is coming. Genesis 3:15 gives us a first glimpse with a promise to the serpent (Satan) that “He shall bruise you on the head.” In 2 Samuel 7:12&13, we learn that He will be a king of the line of David. And in Isaiah 7:14, it is revealed that He will be born of a virgin.
“Someone” was coming and it would be amazing!
Continuing into the New Testament, in the books of Matthew through John, you’ll quickly recognize that… “Someone” had come.
The pages of the gospels ring out the arrival of this someone, “…for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11) Roughly thirty years after this birth, we hear God declaring, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” (Matthew 3:17). And in John 1:41&45 we see Him recognized, by at least a few men, as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.
“Someone” had come and it was astonishing!!
Finally, as you complete this great book, through the Acts of the Apostles to the final Revelation you’ll realize that… “Someone” is coming back.
As the Bible draws to a close, it leaves NO doubt that the story isn’t over yet! Acts 1:11 clearly reveals that the “someone” who will return is Jesus – the very Christ who died for our sins, was buried, and arose on the third day (I Corinthians 15:3&4). And 2 Thessalonians 1:7, along with Revelation 1:7, help us understand that no one will be unaware of His return.
“Someone” IS coming back and it will be awesome!!!
Sixty-six books written by 40 different people over a span of roughly 1500 years…and they still endure today, almost 2,000 years after completion! But to what purpose? That God loves us, and you and I may know what God wants from us (Micah 6:8; Matthew 22:37-39; Matthew 28:19&20)! And that, finally, in living for Him, we may have hope (Colossians 1:5), peace (Philippians 4:6&7), assurance (I John 5:13) and every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3).
Jesus Christ WILL come back…are you ready?
